1998 V70XC Rear Cam seals leaking again!!

Post by shiloh51933 »

I've replaced both rear Cam seals with OEM and after some the pop off or start leaking again. I figured pressure was building up so PCV system was replaced but here we go again. This time it's leaking into the cap/rotor causing random misfire. I'm going nuts over here checking ignition/fuel system and vacuum but not finding anything. It's getting spark but obviously not properly. Any ideas or suggestions?

Is there a lot of base pressure? Is the cam grooved, or the seal seat area worn? Does the seal press in snugly or just slip in? Does the cam have side play like a worn journal or head? Isn't there a drain hole behind the seal, is it clear?

Good ideas. For sure I would actually test the pressure above the cams, i.e. do a glove test. Maybe do a compression test, in case there is a lot of blowby on the rings.

I tried glove test but nothing, car has been randomly misfiring last few days but I'm not sure what happened first. I believe the misses happened first because I check oil constantly due to extreme use of this vehicle daily.

Seat area is good and the rear Cam seals go in snugly. No side play at all but she's been misfiring last few days and I can't figure out why. She has good FP, good spark but I replaced plugs anyway, wires are 6 months old and cap/rotor 6 months old. Only issues I had was at gas pump...have to pull nozzle half out to fill. I replaced purge solenoid, check valves, all vacuum hoses are good. Also the SAS code comes up every once in a while even though I replace air injection pump, solenoid and check valve. Anyway this issue happens around same time so it's gotta be related.

If the car is still slow filling it is possibly the roll-over valve not allowing the air to leave the fuel system as you fill. Not sure on your 98 XC, but check if there is a little canister up near the fuel filler. This is an air-filter and they clog up with age and prevent air evacuating when filling. Last issue will be the charcoal canister if yours is at the rear. These cars have a complex expansion system and if you constantly 'top-up' when filling the tank and the nozzle clicks off, it can eventually flood the carbon filter.
