Exhaust note of 1999 S70 GLT?

Post by shertzog »

The one I just bought has about 290k miles, and sounds like a hotrod! I'm not sure if it maybe has a hole in the exhaust, but it is what I'd expect an R (or T5 maybe?) to sound like, very 'spirited'.

Although, othen than a short dalliance with one Alfa Romeo GTV (3/4 race cams, headers) for comparison, we've always had 4-cyl sedans, the Integra GSR being the most aggressive, so maybe it's just what we're used to.

It's likely a hole or two in the exhaust. The common failure points include the pipe right as it exits the back of the catalytic converter, and the joint between the front and rear sections.

A good custom exhaust shop that knows what they're doing can fix you up with a weld or sleeve repair for a reasonable fee. Those places with the yellow signs only know the "replace with cheaper crap" options.

(Spoken as someone that just had their catalytic converter pipe welded and a used rear section swapped onto the back).

Mine isn't incredibly loud, but it has that beautiful 5 cylinder growl. I love the exhaust note of my GLT. It sounds almost just like my cousin's S70 T5.

To avoid the uncomfortable situation of crawling under the car while the engine is running, some folks have pulled a vacuum on the tailpipe with a shop vac and used cigar smoke to locate leaks (visual evidence being more definitive). Of course if the evap system is leaking fumes around the fuel tank, it's better to have your wife stand outside the car and blow the cigar smoke through a hose.

:) - never! - I'm not even sure if it's in the trunk - I'll make a note to check, in case I get a flat.
