I drove a 130 mile trip yesterday, having just bought my 2000 v70, switched off and, since remote wouldn't work, locked the car manually. Returning to it this morning I unlocked manually, turned the ignition, and got a noise similar to an insect buzzing in the steering column but nothing else. Not a twitch from the instruments, or a cough from the starter. Battery flat? Usually you get something, don't you? Anyway I checked remote again - still not working. Then I tried opening the other doors. They were locked - I couldn't open them from inside or out. Only the driver's door opens on the manual key. I don't think I left anything on last night, and all systems were normal on that drive, but maybe I discharged the battery somehow. Now the problem: the battery is under the load floor? The tailgate won't open, nor will any of the other doors? even from the inside? If a recharge is the answer, how do I get to the battery, still less get it out to recharge it?
I don't know why, but I think this is an immobiliser problem rather than battery, but I don't know how to deal with it. In a word - help!

The starter immobiliser shares the fuse with the locking electronics.
If you have a fault In the lock wiring on any door which blows the fuse your car won't start.
No instruments points to a dead battery though.

I have an 2004 V70. Even though the battery is located in the rear, there is a + terminal provided in the engine compartment to jump or charge it. Use any convenient chassis ground in the engine compartment for the negative.
Les is more.

Being a British car, you're driving what we Yanks would consider a 2001.

Generally speaking, though - It sounds like your new car has a charging
and/or parasitic drain problem. Welcome to the wonderful world of
automotive electrical troubleshooting!

So in order of likelihood IMO:
Bad battery
Decent battery but a problem with the charging circuit, alternator or ground (earth)-so it lost its charge as you drove
ignition lock assembly problem
As mentioned, fuse and/or ?? problem with the immobilizer circuit
Mine is the earlier generation (US didn't get the new body style until 2001), but that buzzing noise for me is only when the battery is so discharged it can't do anything.
