Do I really need the parking brake?

I can add this....on cars with auto transmission,for most time it's not needed,but it's a good thing to have it working properly when you might need it.
It's what it should be....parking and emergency brake.
Personally...i have a habit to use it all the time,except in very cold winter days,no matter if the car have manual or auto transmission.

I would not agree with cn90 that Sommerfeldt like to insult people because i didn't noticed that he insulted anyone here.He just don't like being wrong and doesn't accept other people opinion no mather what.

My '96 T5 auto box wagon had a failed e-brake. That cables were compromised, and even though I bought new cables, I never installed them. I drove the car like that for a couple years. Here in CT, there is no inspection.

My '00 S70 T5M just got all new e-brake parts and pieces, except the cables which the PO had recently replaced. I need an e-brake with a manual

If you really wanted to cause a stir, you'd have asked about what oil or spark plugs to use!

Your question is valid, and being another CT resident, I understand why you ask. Like I said, I didn't have a useful e-brake for several years, and lived to tell the tale. Consider me a heretic!

You know what would be really useful?

Someone should list all the parking brake tutorials and we should vote on which one is best!

Seriously though, I just ordered the parking cables for my wife's car, we had a really weird spring/popping sound that was happening a while back. Hasn't happened since we stopped using the parking brake... My cable housings are broken in the usual spot, right where it bolts to the subframe...

I drove home from work once to find smoke coming from one of the back wheels and the rim was quite warm. I had to completely loosen the e-brake shoes on that wheel.

Fixing my parking brake is on the list, after cv axles, fuel filter, transmission service (in process), ABS module to Matty, odometer, service serpentine belt tensioner, front seats, and peeling clear coat.
