98 S70 T5 -- serpentine belt and noise

Post by mar601 »

I have a loud rattle (sounds like sort of a diesel engine noise) at around 1100 rpm and was told it I need anew serpentine belt and tensioner. I'll assume the noise is coming from the tensioner but while he's in there are there any other components I should replace at 140K? Pulleys? anything?

I know I had the belt replaced once because I did it myself but didn't replace the tensioner at the time.

Thank you very much.

With the belt off, hand-spinning the fixed roller to listen for bearing wear is a good idea. It will be obvious if it's worn and needs replacement.
In fact, I would ask the tech, with you present, to hold some pressure on the tensioner while revving the engine so you can hear for yourself if the noise is still present, changes in some way, or goes away. There are several things in that vicinity that can cause noise.

If you need a tensioner get OE not Meyle. Then you are done thinking about it for the life of the car. No replacing it in 15-30k miles. Might not happen but I wouldn't chance it.

thanks JIm -- been busy past few days. actually I think that pulley has been noisy before -- cold weather makes it worse? but at 140k it should probably be replaced anyway? what do they call it so it I can go ahead and order one.

you say several other things to look for in that area?

but the tensioner and pully would be the most likely source of the noise?

thanks

ok I see it on FCP -- should I just go ahead and get a new belt tensioner pulley and an idler pully --are those what you're talking about? if he's in there doing the tensioner both of these would be easy to replace? thanks
