Timing Belt change - 2010 V50 1.6d DRIVe

Hello, Does anyone know where I can find instructions on how to change the timing belt, idler pulley and tensioner for this particular model?

I have heard of Green Books, but I havent been able to find any for newer cars.

I would like to do this job myself but I need step by step instructions along with torq. specs as well as how to lock the cam in place and so on.

Any information or direction to manuals would be greatly appreciated.

I'll try looking for you, but in the meantime, you might consider a virtual copy of VIDA on your computer. What you do is run WindowsXP within your Windows as a virtual machine and within that, bring up VIDA which is Volvo's software that shows repair instructions, part numbers, etc. it's quite a nice resource to have an I would think it has your model in it. Just make sure and read it to the end before downloading and installing it...things could have changed some since I did this.

Okay- I have printed from VIDA to PDF...I'm not even sure if I have the right car- your diesels are foreign to us here and the research I did showed it as a 4 cylinder.... anyway, if this will get you started, great. If this is totally wrong, PM me your VIN# and I can try again.

Yes, these are the correct instructions for this particular engine the D4164T. although I am a bit discouraged by the amount of special tools required.

I thought that I was replying to you but somehow when I hit submit it said I had successfully reported you. Something went wrong. You have done nothing wrong so don't worry. I had a great answer to you too but now I just have to much going to respond. I do think that the inst. could be clearer esp. about how to actually change the belt. Anyway, I'll post back later.

Okay, back for a few mins... the tools are very specific to Volvo but most people don't have them. We improvise, so see what you have that can take the place of certain tools. What's really needed? anyway, I think it's very possible.!

No worries, I had not even noticed that.

I agree, I wish these instructions were more detailed. I want the treasure trove of data :) At least torque specs are there though and well someone might get-by with these diagrams. It is do-able.

I suppose you're right most of these tools can be improvised.

Good luck with it- take pictures and post a "how-to!" I know that most don't have your car, but when they do a search and come here, it will have been worth their while!

Hey Mij,

I decided to go to a mechanic to have it done. I thought maybe it was within my comfort zone but I decided to play the safe card.

I was curious if you know if it is normal for the cam sprocket to stop in different locations every time you turn the engine off?

If I remember right before having the timing belt, pulley and tensioner changed the cam sprocket always seemed to stop at a position where two holes lined up (one was through the sprocket and the other hole was in the engine). It was as if you could put a pin in there and now after the job the cam stops at different places.

Is it possible that something was not done right?

Do you know of a way to confirm if the timing is correct?
