That sounds an awful lot like when I had bent valves. Do a compression test- that seems to be the only thing you haven't done and it's easy to do.

Btw, have you made sure your ignition order is correct? I think even with ignition packs it would be possible to get a couple out of order...that may be all that's wrong.

Compression test is next on the list after we ensure the ignition is good. No, I'm not certain the order is correct, but that is definitely something I'll check.

Firing order wrong will do all that you're dealing with right now- I did this once on a button/rotor S70...but I was off at the rotor...still, some of the ignition coils are paired off on your car on top of the engine and you could mix two of these up and you're in the same boat!!

Hopefully that's what it is! I'm pretty sure they are right, but it never hurts to check. My cousin and I just bought a Nissan 300zx to fix up, so we need to try and get this S70 back up and running!

Finally got around to testing spark today... nada. I tested two cylinders, neither produced any spark. What I'm thinking about is the crank sensor, but is that at the harmonic balancer or at the flywheel? If it's at the balancer, it might be possible that we hit it and damaged it (?) while routing the timing belt.
What are other reasons I'm not getting spark? It's a little harder to diagnose on the coil-on-plug cars.

Hmmmm, you could have some bad coil packs...change some around and see if the ones that weren't firing fire now. It's weird that 2 would go at the same time but makes sense. 2 not firing probably won't fire your engine but only one out, it would fire and then misfire.

I was initially thinking the same, but I don't know for sure. I will have to take another look at the coils. The two we tested today were not OE coils, they were replaced at some point. Cylinders 3-5, though, are original Volvo coils.
What I'm thinking now is that maybe the immobilizer needs to be reset. The car has an aftermarket alarm that a previous owner installed, which we might try to rip out. I read something about locking and unlocking the car 3 times to reset the factory immobilizer, will that work for this car?

That's not a normal cranking sound. What's the compression in each cylinder reading?
