rattling noise

02 V70 T5. 165k.
Cold start has excessive rattling noise. Like something metal is boucing around. Once car warms up rattling subsides but doesnt stop. While driving the rattling gets worse with some internittent crazy rubbing noise I cant really even describe besides short burst of deep rubbing that might or might not be metallic. Noises seem to be comming from under the car... oil pan area, perhaps even the timing/belts area. Also white smoke coming out of tailpipe when parked and engine revved.
Digital scanner shows no codes. Instrument panel (cluster) does not work.
Pcv system, Water pump, tensioner, serp belt, alternator, & valve job

all done within the last 5k miles.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

many times rattling noise is from rusted out parts holding the exhaust system (tailpipe,muffler) together, i have had other rattling noises be loose parts (nuts/bolts) holding airfllow parts in the engine compartment, start it up and look around and underneath the car. white smoke seems to indicate a damaged head gasket, check the oil for any milky residue and under the oil cap, these are just basic observation procedures that i take when something is going on with my cars. rubbing noise???

Perhaps uploading a Video may help us being more precise. As above, there are heat shields behind the engine and along the exhaust pipe that can get loose and rattle, and I also have a worn A/C pulley which sounds something like a rattle snake.

The white smoke could be because the head wasn't properly machined? It is good to have the cluster working so as to be aware of any message such as low coolant level. Not all digital scanners show all codes.

Ebay services are great for repairing the instrument panel albeit not cheap - around $200. I got mine fixed by a tv repair shop for under $100. Remember not to have the key in contact while the panel is out of the car.

YES. This fits perfect. I believe my a/c compressor is failing. All symptoms point to that.

Exhaust manifold bolts come to mind...the exhaust manifold is cracked...

Welp... Turns out it was the turbo. Once I got the heat shield off it was a lot easier to hear with the engine running. After I pulled the turbo off, I found both turbine and compressor wheels were very loose... So theres my power loss and rattling noises...also there was quite a bit of oil that was in the unit so hopefully with a new(er) turbo back in it all will be well?!?
Found a couple junk yarders online. Word to the wise with LKQ??

LKQ is fine, but I'd just stuff a new CHRA in your housing and call it good.

That guy put a rebuild kit in his. They're $50.

To avoif balancing issues and to get new wheels I would do the whole CHRA. Split the housing, shove new pieces in, reassemble.

if you're not comfortable doing that, find a local diesel shop that can do it for you. you'll end up with a "remanufactured" turbo with new bits instead of a junkyard used piece for the same amount of money.
