steering feel

So i was wondering why the steering on my 96 R with 205/45 r17 feels so much less power steering supported than my 95 10V wit 195/55 R16? Are they supposed to feel that different? I doint the 1cm of width makes that mich difference. Or is there an adapting unit that reduces force at higher speed as some newer cars have it that is going bad on the r? No leaks, no strange noises, everything seems fine except for the difference in steering support.

Any ideas are welcome

If you can swap the front wheel over from both cars, I think you will find they are most likely the same. The issue is not that the tires are 'Only' 1cm wider, that are also got more surface in contact with the ground. Do you run similar pressures in the tires?

My 2000 R on 225/45/17 is easier to turn than our older 98 V70 Xc was on 195/65/15's. They do have different pumps though!

From my experience no two Volvo P80s have the same feel in the steering be they the same year and same model or not. They all seem to have their own unique personality. The AWD versions are always very different but even two 850 FWD sedans, side by side with the same tires, will feel different.

The are quite a few things that can interfere with the steering assistance, going from old fluid, rusty rack, worn pump, seized lower steering shaft coupler, rusty steering shaft boot bearing, worn strut bearings, just to name the basic ones
