it's not esoteric knowledge, it's making yourself familiar with what you're working on, and that's their responsibility.

I would get an estimate from another shop that is capable of doing the repair, and hand them the bill.

That's not being mean or spiteful, that's having them pay for their mistake, nothing more.

If you opt to have them attempt to restore the band anchor, get their admission of fault in writing, and get a timeline and expected outcome.
That way if it goes badly you'll have something to force their hand. otherwise they may tell you to bugger off when the time comes to put a new transmission in it because they hosed it attempting a repair.

Remove the B4 servo cover and piston which is located near the LHS front wheel. This prevents the piston from pushing the band about 5 degrees anti clockwise.

Then use the Swedespeed method as above with a holed bolt. About 45 minutes' work.

Removing the side cover is about 10-12 hours of work so generally avoid this method.
