92 740 Wagon Tail Lights

Post by Dalpatine »

Hey all,

I have a 92 Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon. all of the sudden, the Bulb Failure light on the dash is turning on when I hit my brakes, and when I switch on my running lights. I checked and the issue is that the passenger side rear running and brake light are not coming on. The turn signal and reverse light on that side are working fine. I replaced the bulbs and still no change. All the other rear lights work fine. Is this a relay issue? Any ideas what I could try?

#1 cause based on what you posted is the ground contact on the bulb socket or the ground plate on lamp is crusty. The ground contact on bulb socket may also have relaxed. With the inside cover for that lamp removed and a stick between seat and brake pedal and seat slid forward to hold down pedal (or someone sitting there holding brake pedal down) push in on the bulb socket and turn it very slightly to see if it brake lights come on. Turn on park lamps and check the same way for that light working. This will tell you if the socket and contact spots are causing it.
No relay involved for just one side but the bulb failure detection module could cause this but with brake and tail both out that is less likely.
