1994 850 base. Radio no sound...

Post by mtrdrms »

Hello wonderful volvo community. So I did a lot of searching and didn't find what i am looking for. Radio turns on and seems to be working fine. However, no sound at all. I pulled the radio and it has no amplifier. Wires look good and connections are tight. What else can I check? Is the radio shot? Thans so much!

Fuses. The radio has two of them, #7 & #31 IIRC.

I just replaced both fuses (even though they looked fine) and still nothing. Any other suggestions?

Check them for power.
You can measure voltage while they're in place using a meter.
The small metal nibs on top should both be hot with the key on.

What about cassettes and CD? Any sound from those sources?

End of the day, though, you may just have a dead HU.

Replacement HU are cheap at PnP yards normally. When on sale I pay about $15 for a SC-816 unit. Get the VIN # for the car as it makes getting the radio code easier. If you find a SC-900 or 901 unit with the 3 disc changer built in, you need to get the amp (under passenger seat or behind the radio) and the connecting cable.

Just wanted to follow up on this one and the issue ended up being a bad head unit. I swapped in one from a 98 v70 and it works like a charm. Haven't tried the CD player but the tuner is perfect. Thanks!

Glad you got to the bottom of the issue. I am hearing of more and more of the old head units failing as well as the amps on the units fitted with them. I guess age is catching up!
