Oil Leak 97 850 glt wagon

Post by tcapp »

Guys, I've got a new oil leak and can't find where its coming from. Its not leaking alot but its dripping on the back side of the motor making it smoke up from under the hood. On the top of the motor there is a round cap behind the oil fill spout and it looks as if the leak might be coming from there but I don't know what that is. Any help is welcome.

Help me out guys,

Behind the oil fill spout, there is a round cap the same size as the oil fill spout. Every time I lift the hood it has a ring of oil on it. After driving just enough to reach operating temperture, I get oil smoke coming up from under the hood very time I stop. I am losing about a quart of oil every 100 miles. Once I park it, there is about a quarter size drop on the street. It looks as though it may be coming from that cap and burning off on the back of the motor. I want to bring it into the shop but I would love to know how big a repair this might be before I take it in and if this is something I can fix in the yard.

Thanks for the help,

There may be oil on that cap but I don't think it can come out of there. The most likely place for an oil leak that high on the engine is from the oil filler itself. One of the most overlooked parts on any car is the seal under the oil filler cap and that is where I would start looking.

By the amount of oil you are losing I would suspect you also have a PCV problem. If this is clogged it will force oil out of any part that is weak.
