900 miles for 140 bucks - you probably were pretty even with running the Volvo in terms of cost - and you probably saved a bit in gas with the NB.

I would have taken the P80 just for the seats, though.

So the ultimate road trip precaution is to leave the P80 at home and rent a VW Beetle??

Since the P80 seats are one of the reasons we hang on to these old cars, I guess our precaution is packing our clothes in carry-ons in case we need to fly home.

Sadly that ended up being biggest precaution . Given the choice though, I'd have never taken a Beetle--maybe Corolla or Mazda 3. Who buys those things?
