Is this my evap? And does it look terrible?

Post by Pezgoon »

Of course it looks terrible!

But the question is, is this my evaporator, and is it cleanable/saveable? What do you guys think? (93 850 71k essentially sitting for 5 years)

Also while I was under the dash and Pulling it apart I removed the knee bolster and found this stuck to the bottom of my airbag

Thought, man that's a very weird place to have a magnet... Then noticed it was covering up the warning, had a WTF?? Moment and noticed this

That's the underside of the corner tweeter, pretty sure your generally not supposed to see light through it, I guessing some new tweeters and probably all the speakers are now on my list

I was thinking If the evap drain isn't clogged maybe I can try rinsing the evaporator off and drying it to try and save it? Even if the drain is clogged I will probably try to unclog it and do the same, whats your opinions?
Thanks

Eric

Sure - give the cleaning thing a try first. You might need some steam cleaning to dislodge that kind of buildup.

When I asked my "magic 8 ball" if your 23 year old evaporator would still be good, it said "highly unlikely". :)

Well now thats contradictory with the fortune cookie that told me "anything is possible"

I'll try and find a steam cleaner although I dont know if I will be able to, would hot water from a hose maybe work? I can hook a hose up to a faucet of mine and get it in there otherwise I may have a dashboard opening on my list :(

I was really hoping to avoid that too lol

That magnet comes from your speaker. Reattach with glue - the speaker will work again!

Evaporator foam cleaner might be a good candidate in there. Probably a little easier to control your spray with a no rinse foam. Its an idea anyway. Nice finding that magnet in there, stereo should sound better now

Tough decision whether to replace it, considering it is 23 years old.
Since you are "already there" you may as well replace it.
This is such a big job, I'd stick to Volvo OEM Evap and O-rings etc.

Then install a Cabin Filter, this is a must!!!

Yes I already got the cabin filter, sadly getting all the other parts ive needed has drained my funds and I think the evaps gonna have to wait. Where do I find evaporator foam cleaner? I may give it a whirl.

I just got my power stage today and put it in so my climate control now works, I spent the rest of the day getting new tires just to have them put the wrong size on and a I didn't realize it till my third tire (I had to bring them two at a time and they only had three tires) so I didn't get to do anything else I needed to and now I have to waste another day doing my tires as the shitheads didn't double check and confirm the size!

I have yet to run the car and try the compressor, I may do that tomorrow and see if it has gas left in it (or ill put one of the three gauges I have on there) if its got gas in it I know it hasn't been recharged.. probably ever so I'll know if the evap is good or not and whether to even waste the time cleaning it. Actually I may go out and do it right now so I dont feel as though my entire day was wasted with the tire shop.

On a side note, I will say I'm gullible, but will re gluing the magnet actually work? From what I know of speakers, once something like that happens the driver is done for whether reattached or not

Ok so went out with a gauge

Big old 0

:(

Should I try filling it with gas and seeing what happens? Maybe JUST MAYBE (doubtfull) it leaked out some other way....? lol I'll start saving and shopping for a new evap *Deep sigh*

on the other note, that clogged evap really kills the blowers, I get oodles of power from the fan coming through the hole where the power stage goes then when the power stage is in there I get a gentle breeze from the blowers lol

Damn I was going to say where to get the cleaner just now I guess its good you didn't waste money on that. I agree with what you said about the speaker being damaged. Its not as simple as regluing. Probably should just look for a salvage one off ebay. How are the steering lines going for you?

Try pulling a vacuum and seeing if it holds. Cheaper and better for environment.

But, you have a leak. I have 15 year old cars that have never needed a " top off" in the AC system.
