did they pull the pan and have a look in there?

because if they didn't pull the pan you shouldn't trust their diagnosis, if they had pulled the pan and found a bunch of metal in there I'm sure they would have saved a sample to show you. I know I would have.

Is it worth trying to drop the oil pan and see if I can get to the bearings for replacement? A bandaid or possible fix?
Right now the car is at the shop and I'll need to make a decision. Maybe sell it for parts. The body and interior are in great shape.

Used engines are from $550 with 90 days warranty. No reason to change bearings.

Good link for engines it seems. The trick is to get one with lower miles...If your tranny is good, use it- get an exact replacement (same exact numbers on your engine and the one you're buy)...try to find one that is close by so no expensive shipping... It will still require a lot of work!! I wouldn't buy the cheapest one you find ($550)...maybe $1000 would buy you a better one. If your tranny is questionable- try to find an engine with the tranny already attached. Good luck and let us know how things go!
