I've attached a picture of the crack. You've helped me in the past so I was hoping you can tell me what it is that's broken, give me a place to start learning more. Don't be afraid to give me bad news; the car is old and I'm not particularly attached. You can see a crack behind where the thermostat would go, fluid did leak out. 2002 v40
Thanks much.
So something broke
I'm sorry about the cruddy picture, cars always break at night right?
Thanks for the link, the part doesn't look like the same to me but working off memory. Allow me to go down there and take better pictures. If that is it any estimate, in terms of work hours, to get a new one installed?

No idea, you should be able to tell better than anyone since you have the car.

Hey thanks a lot. Parts were 160, double that to install. We actually decided though to just move on. It's been a great tank of a car but ready for something else.
Just one more question, how long can it sit there low\empty of coolant? temp is about 80 to 90 during the day. Won't be started or drove of course.

Driving with a huge leak? Maybe 3 minutes before damage is done, probably 10-15 minutes until the engine cook itself.
I'd fix it, sell it for $2k vs selling it as-is for $500.

Sorry I meant how long can it sit there unused being low on coolant. With that housing being cracked the fluid leaks out as I add it. I'm going to look into donating the car but don't want it to sit there baking in the sun if it's going to make things worse.
From what I've gathered installing the new lower housing etc will be a PITA for the mechanic around 3hrs; it is very cramped.
Thanks again

Alright thanks. The fact that the coolant leaks out immediately as I add it makes me wonder if there is more broken then just that housing. Any idea what else would be likely to break\fail along with that part or would it being cracked as it is be enough to cause the immediate coolant leak?
Appreciate all the info.
