XC 70 AWD 2006 - Oil leak?

Post by Metallo »

Hi there,

Yesterday, I did the yearly engine oil/filter change, usually I do it in June after a top up in December with 1.4L.
I was expecting to get to June with the oil level being at the min. on the dipstick (as every year), but this time the level was about 3/4" below the min. level

The car has 235.000 KM, runs smoothly, no errors or whatsoever, however, when I was removing the oil drain plug, I noticed three wet areas, I have no clue whether they are related to the low level of the engine oil.
I took some pictures, I am sure you can tell me what it is and what should I do next.

Pretty normal after all those miles- just keep an eye on them! The first picture of the turbo is very normal...the other two, I'm trying to still make out where they are...but if it's just a tiny bit- like I said, don't worry about it... You might however check your rear or exhaust cam seal...it sometimes goes quickly than others and can drip from the top... just a little at first. If it's barely wet, I wouldn't sweat it but I would investigate the PCV system to make sure it's not starting to clog up. If it is not breathing properly, then the leaks will progress.

Thank you MadeinJapan!

I wonder, is it possible that the car consumes so much oil in 1 year?
Basically, when you change the oil & filter you fill up 5.85L, if I look at what was left, I'd say it consumed 3.5L in 6 months.
The previous year I only had a top up 1L after 6 months and, at the end of the year, the dipstick level was at the Min. bar.
This year I found it way too low the Min. bar, as I previously mentioned, approx 3/4", that is why I am concerned.

1 liter every 5000km isn't too bad, and you guys drive a lot in Canada. How many kms did you drive in the year?

You should check the oil dipstick every month or so on a ten year old car. You don't want to run this lie on oil, it gets really expensive fast. Those leaks look really minor, almost just seeps, not leaks, so not worth fixing yet.

Hi,

I drove 16.000 Km, not much, but yeah, I will check this monthly now... So, it this going to get worst?
LOL I have a car running on oil instead of gas :)

With my 940, I drive the same Kms a year and no top up is needed :) The total mileage is 216.000!

My V70 has probably consumed at the 1 liter per 4000km rate since 2000

Just keep a bit better eye on that oil level and enjoy it

Sorry I sounded preachy above, it's an Internet thing
