Same engine. The belts need to be replaced at 70K miles. Rollers, probably, for sure at 140K. Hydraulic tensioner 180-200K. Water pump at 180-200K.
Of course, if you don't drive much, 10 years is the max for a belt.

The OEM Volvo water pump easily goes 200k.

I would suggest to take a little time for reading and learning about things before claiming something wrong.johno504 wrote:180 - 200k on a water pump ????? that's a FOOLS game ...........
Mine water pump was replaced last year at 300+ k km because it started to leak from a weep hole.It was original oem pump.
I'm noticing that there are more and more members who write whatever they want to according to their own understanding and persuasion and without a facts and experience about something.
The worst thing about it is that they are ready to argue about it even if they are wrong which is unacceptable on this kind of forum.
This is not a fight ring, although sometimes i would be more happier that it is since i'm a sportsman, fighter and i train since i was a kid.
This forum was always a best forum with a lots of members who knows these cars like their pockets and i would be happy that it remains like that.
This forum is full of knowledge,experience....etc...and all you need is to ask, read & learn.

Everybody's experience will be different but for what it's worth, I waited until 185k miles to replace the original water pump on my '97 855 GLT. It was working fine at the time, with no leaks visible. The inside looked fine when I removed it.

Ah yes!jreed wrote:Everybody's experience will be different ...
Key to remember because in the end you have to do the repair in front of you not the one you read about on the internet. And key to forget because whatever happens with your car is but one example and in the forums you can piece together the collected wisdom of dealing with sometimes thousands of examples.
The second point is overlooked so often, I agree with misha it is good to keep in mind how much useful history is packed away in the archives. That search button is, still, your friend! Or the write-ups and videos, there are good ones that summarize what has emerged from the forum discussions. At the same time, parts manufacturers change, the cars keep getting older so different things start to fail, etc., so many repair recommendations are a moving target. At least that keeps it interesting.

Mine was a bit scarier at about the same mileage. I think this one came out of my '94 at, after correcting the odometer, had somewhere around 170 k on it.
That one had no leaks whatsoever.
I am a bit sensitive on the water pumps since I had one fail and take the timing belt with it on my wife's car. Fortunately that engine was a full clearance engine and it didn't take out the valve train. On a Volvo it is a disaster if the pump locks up. My experience with timing belts is that they rarely fail on their own, even beyond the prescribed change interval. It is usually something else that causes the belt to fail like a bad roller, water pump, or a bad tensioner.

Our old V70 XC (98) decided that the time for the water pump to fail was immediately after installing the new timing belt. That was at about 150k, miles. The reality is it is all dependant on what your comfort level is, and experience. I know Volvo used to say every second cam-belt to change the pump. The problem with that is different driving styles and locations (city v's country) can be harder on a pump and engine.
My view is for the price and effort involved I'd rather swap the pump out.
Neil.
