850 sedan real spare tire that fits

Post by DeathRex »

My donut spare tire looks to be original and appears to be delaminating. I hate donuts when they are tires, what size tire can you fit on the original rims that will mostly fit into the spare tire well?

In all of my P80 cars, the spare is a standard 15 inch wheel with a 195/60r15 tire. They fit fine. If you have a wagon with a third row seat you have to cut out a non-functioning section of the seat belt mount though.

Any time I get an 850 or x70, part of the first-pass routine is to throw away the donut tire and put in a full size spare. Those things are a waste of space.

I'd like to use a full size tire as a spare, but they don't seem to fit. What have yall got to fit in the place the spare tire sits?

My rims are 16 X 6.5 inches. My tires are 205 55 R16 and they don't quite fit in my sedan. I was thinking about getting 205 50 R16 or 205 45 R16 as a spare. Would they fit in the spare tire well?

195/65/15 will fit perfectly to a spare tire space.

I'm surprised that 205/55/16 doesn't fit.Overall diameter is bigger for a 15'' wheel than for a 16". :?

The wheel width is one of the limiting factors. IIRC the spare is 4.5 and the tire 'bulge' isn't past the two (inner and outer) rim of the wheel. 5" width might be the max for not interfering with the spare tire well.

It might be nice to have the spare be on a matching 16 inch rim but the truth is, you will probably never use it. Or almost never. So maybe just go with a 15 inch wheel in the spare.

I think the area below the trunk floor is the same on my S70. I use a 16 inch Perfo wheel in that location 205/55/16...it bulges up the floor there about 2 inches but I live with that- it's better than having a blow out on a sunday evening, trying to get home from a long trip and having to run on the donut- ask me how I know.

It's completely the same.....it's the same car after all.
Maybe it would be tight, but it should fit in in a spare wheel space.
205/55/16 should be fine.
