Power steering leak at the rear main seal

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Power steering leak at the rear main seal

Post by Mustangman »

I have a power steering leak and after removing the splash guard I saw it leaking from the bottom of the engine where the transmission and engine connect. Does anyone know how it can be leaking from there?

You list no details on your S80 but I will assume it is a V8 model as that is the only one that can leak PS fluid from the top front mounted pump into engine valley where it can run into the drain hole that will carry it to the bell housing. The pump likely is leaking at the o ring for a fitting on back of pump.

Yes it is the V8. How big of a fix is that or to say it another way, what is involved to fix it.

It is not too hard to do. Volvo does not service that o ring that is the usual leak so you have to remove pump (take off serp belt, undo the bolts through holes in pulley, undo the lines. Suck out fluid first and lots of rags) aand then go have o ring matched at an auto store. Inspect the serp belt pulleys while you are at it. The bbearings in those pulleys fail and can break the front engine cover. The bearings in pulleys can be changed easily instead of whole pulley if you are so inclined. My NAPA store was able to match bearing. It is used as alternator and transmission pilot bearing on many vehicles.

Ok so @jimmy57 this o ring is on the power steering pump? Like a return line from the engine? Yeah earlier I replaced one of the idler pull is and advised the owner the other pulley was giving out too. Thank you for your help.

Like Jimmy mentioned, Volvo doesn't service the seals.

The only thing we have here at FCPEURO is a new pump unfortunately.
You can find it here: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 0-36000267
