2003 s60 engine sputters then dies
Hello guys, noob here. I have a 2003 volvo s60. while driving home at highway speeds my car started losing power and eventually quit running. i coasted to safety. It starts every time after this happens, but it will only run for 3 mins before the stuttering starts and eventually it will die again. I went to the local parts store and they read the code p0089, fuel pressure regulator. Changed out the fuel pressure sensor because seems it's the part that fails most often. Started car, ran for about 5 mins at idle before i decided to test drive. I drove less than a mile before the sputtering and dead engine occurred. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

First thing to cbeck would have been fuel pressure, and if you plug a code scanner in you'd get that parameter. That would have saved some money. At this point since code says fp reg then I'd look at pump comtrol module and/or pump.

If fuel pressure sensor reads a low pressure will it cut power to motor? What I'm saying is does it protect the engine by cutting power? If so the problem could be the sensor itself if it's out of calibration. Any hands here that may know if this occurs may also save you a fuel pump or fuel control module.
Next thing to test is power at fuel pump. You will need to remove rear seat (disconnect battery to avoid SRS errors, however you may need an SRS reset tool anyway ) and test for power at fuel pump. As engine runs for 2-3 minutes you will have to test all the leads.
If power is present yet drops out the VERY moment the engine dies then the fuel supply module is faulty.
If engine dies yet power remains for 2-3 seconds then the blame is on the fuel pump itself.
Of course checking for fuel pressure at the rail at time of failure would also be of great help.

Also do not forget to check/clean your MAF sensor, I already had problems on few occasions where I would get different codes for different problems and when nothing seams to fix the problem it turned out to be the stupid MAF sensor

previously had PEM die, causes pump to die entirely
But recently had p0089, caused by line inside tank came off pump so low pressure in lines caused p0089.
I replaced the clip that snaps into pump, seems ok now, all codes gone, waiting for all tests to complete for inspection

Just a guess since this kind of issue is all but obvious to answer on a forum. As above, on top of the FPS, the PEM is known to corrode and fail. On my metal gas tank (as opposed to the plastic gas tank) the PEM is on pass side right on top and side of the gas tank, reachable by hand. There seems to be a debate whether a new PEM needs programmed or not by the Volvo dealer. Check scrap yards for a recently replaced one, or cry some tears listening to the dealer's quote.
