Oil - Synthetic to standard

Post by asummers »

We recently purchased a 2010 XC60 with 84,000 miles. There wasn't an oil change sticker on the car, so I don't know if it has standard, blend, or synthetic oil in it. Is it true that you are not supposed to switch from synthetic to standard? I am perplexed at what oil to change it with. I do have one source for an answer though. On the car fax there is a Volvo dealer listed that made an oil change last year at 71,000 miles. It is Volvo Saab of Charlotte. I am going to give them a call and see if they have a record of what oil was put in it.

I see no reason switching to standard (mineral) to be an issue. However, for turbo engines, "synthetic" oil is way better to prevent turbo wear plus , I see your cars do very high miles, synthetic should help getting there too.

The dealer's service department in Charlotte confirmed it is standard 5w-30 oil that was put in the car when they changed it. So, now I am pricing oil changes. Dang! It's been a long time since I haven't changed my own oil. $50 plus for standard oil. Of course it does hold 8 freaking quarts off oil!
