Re: Strange intermittent short stutter '95 850 t5 (BAD MAF)

Post by kaneelschep »

So today it did it again. Undrivable stuttering and no idle.
But I found some logic to the madness!

With engine off I disconnected the maf connector.
Ran the engine. Wich works semi ok then. And even idles quite normal.
Turned engine off again, reconnect the maf, start engine. No more problem.
Same as when i cleaned it basicly.

Anyone has a thought on that?
Or does this simply mean it is the end for the maf?

Thanks!

Before rushing out and buying a MAF have you checked the connector and the wiring to the connector. It could be you are moving the wire when disconnecting and it is 'repairing' a break or bad connection.

No i am not rushing out to buy anything at the moment.
First i am poking around at that maf, cables and plug.
Maybe see if i can get another maf free or almost free secondhand maf to test if the problem comes back.
But i have to drive 1500km on saterday.
So any thoughts are always welcome. ;-)

I poked around a lot today. :) But cant find a problem with the wiring.
Twisted and folded them into every form and postition it would let me from top to bottom, while revving it.
Cant recreate the issue by doing this.
So that sort of sais the wires are ok.. I guess.

Got the maf from its housing again.
I couldnt get a replacement from a wreckers or a friend.
Have been reading about mafs again all day.
Basicly all issues do really point towards the maf.
But I just cannot find a story where it is only broken sometimes.
And will just work again after being disconnected and reconnected.
They all seem to either just die or give big or small problems continuesly.
Not just glitch shortly and work again perfectly later.

Now I took some pictures.
I read somewhere about this seal on the maf itself dissolving over time and giving strange errors.

What do you think about that?
The seal is soft. you can clearly see my nail pressed in it a few times. It feels like glue that hasnt dried proberly. Very soft and sticky.
To me that could also look like it has been resealed actually.
Wich I also noticed is the datestamp. '95. This is an end 95 car.
Could this be the original? With 300000km on it...
I read of lifespans from maximum 100000 till 250000?

Drove another 300km to some yunkjard in the north of holland. No problems again whatsoever with the car. Too bad they only had the wrong mafs and the only heaterfan ran even less smooth than mine. Still was a nice row of V70's and 850's with lots to pluck off. :)
Every car I find seems to have the bosch 0280 217 002. or the newer bosch 0 280 218 108.
According to Bosch there is a difference in max measured air.
Well it was a good test again.
I have faith that the car will be good for the trip to Hungary tonight.
With a dog and a cat. Trying to find LPG tankstations in the night through germany.
Cruise on 120 and music loud. It will be great.
