Valve Ticking

I have the typical valve ticking, it goes away after the engine warms up a bit but will sometimes come back if idling for long periods of time or if the oil is close to needing to be changed. Is the pump itself bad or is it possibly some O-rings that can be replaced?

First thing is probably to check if your oil filter holds pressure. If it doesn't it will tick a bit. To be fair, my previous '95 ticked at startup no matter what I did....

How do I check to see if it's holding pressure?

Our self adjusting hydraulic lifters make the noise on start up and until we get enough oil into the lifter area.

The older Volvos like yours use a valve in the oil filter to try to hold oil pressure in the engine to reduce this issue on start up. As I only use Volvo filters, I can't speak for other brands, but I think Mann also do but not 100%.

What oil do you use? 5W30 can cause this on older engines so you could try 10W30 or 10W40 and a high mileage version of oil.

Finally, if the 'o' ring seals between the oil pan and the block have never been replaced they will be hard and shrunken which reduces the oil pressure in the block to head.

I use mobil1 5w30 full synthetic I called a Volvo dealership and asked what he recommended for viscosity and that's what he told me to use. I'll try the 10w30 but I'm wondering how it will affect it with the temperatures soon to change. Is there something specific on Volvo filter vs other brands? I normally use the mobil1 filter as well but this last change I put a Purolator because it was a package deal and was half price with that filter. Is there a video/ link I can go to for a how to on replacing the O-rings?

The issue is with the filters ability to pass the oil with low restriction. The stock filter (Mann) and Mahle filters are fine. Others restrict too much and will cause oil starvation especially at idle.

If it ticks and you change the filter to a Volvo (Mann), Mann or Mahle and it stops - you had a bad filter. I see this all the time.

I have not tested every filter so can't tell you by name which is bad. Almost all have an anti-drainback valve so don't worry about that part. The oil pressure would stop the ticking in seconds after start up even without an anti drainback valve (given flow was appropriate)

I see this soo frequently I keep a case of the Mann/Volvo filters at home so when folks come by my house without appointment on the weekends I can just swap out the bad filter for a good one. The tick stops - heart rates lower - every breathes easier - all is well. If its still ticking after that - you have issues)

Volvo has known about the bad aftermarket filters since they made the 850. Many dealerships would tell you that if it came in with a non Volvo filter (Mann and mahle allowed) they would not honor oil starvation issues under warranty. I remember the sit down I had with service when my new 96 850 Turbo arrived.

You would think this would be a direct violation of the Magnuson -Moss warranty act of 1975 but Volvo proved many times that other brands were not equivalent in this case and that the fault was caused by the deception of other brands claiming it was equivalent. This same issue also occurred for Toyota several times and for Honda a few times. (Their filters are too small in my opinion.)

Long story short - call up FCP and get a case of good filters and crush washers . It makes a difference

Sounds like a simple and much cheaper fix than a new oil pump. Will stop by and get a Mann filter at my local store today and give it a shot.

Consider ordering your next batch from an online vendor. When I went to advance auto the Mann oil filters were $18

Mann and Mahle are about 6 and change from Amazon, and Fcp has good deals on them as well.

They are $10.75 in my area, I used to work at the parts store here so the manager still gives me a discount on top of that. I'll get just the one to get it quick at least from there but will order the bulk online for sure though!
