Scan Tool Code Reader Suggestions?

Post by rimutakaman »

Hello all -- I just bought a 2006 XC70. The check engine light is on and I am looking for recommendations on simple code readers that will work on this vehicle. I'm just looking for one that will read the stored codes and will reset the CEL once the problem has been fixed.

I read that someone with a 2004 V70 recommended an Autel MaxiScan MS300 (https://www.amazon.com/Autel-MaxiSca.../dp/B001LHVOVK) as a simple reader. I purchased one, but it will not read the codes on my 2006 XC70.

Can anyone recommend a simple code reader they like that will work on a 2006 XC70? Thanks!

That should work fine on your 2006. Can you describe or screen shot the messages?

Thanks for your response. The scanner background lights up when it's connected, it begins to run through the scan process (it gives two preliminary messages indicating it is connecting), but then when the codes should appear I get the message "Link Error!" I tried to read the codes numerous times, (unplugging it then reconnecting, while also turning the ignition off then on again to the on position) it but every time with this same result. I did a visual inspection of the wiring at the OBD2 port and all looks fine.

Any suggestions as to why I can't read the CEL codes with this reader?

Take it to AutoZone or Advance and have them read the codes to see if its your reader or your OBD port ...or....read another car with it.

Im guessing your reader is defective.

I took it to an independent mechanic and he read the code (P0243) just fine with a simple Actron CP9575 scanner. I agree with your conclusion: I just happened to get a bad reader.

I figured since I will be owning this car for awhile, I would spend a bit more on a scanner. I did not want to get into VIDA and need to work with a computer. I found this one (https://www.amazon.com/iCarsoft-i906-Ve ... B00S8KJHBM) that seems read it all: ECU, SRS, ABS. I found one on sale for $108.

Thanks for talking it out and helping me work through my issue.

A lot of us have no interest in ever owning a Windows computer, ever again.

I can confirm that the Autel MS300 will not connect up to a 2006 XC70. I guess considering how much I paid for it I'm not terribly surprised. Works fine on several other cars I've tried it on, mostly American branded vehicles.

Debating whether I wish to invest in a knock off Dice system for this car or not. I currently have issues with the parking sensors on the vehicle and would like to read which one(s) are bad. BTW, the 2006 XC70 is my older sister's car. My younger sister has a Subaru Outback that I support also and I'd like to get a better diagnostic system for that car too. Be nice to find an inexpensive tool for multiple cars. Yeah, I know, when pigs fly...

I got a killer deal on the 800 series AUTEL which reads and clears all my cars ( see list below). I think the 500 would do volvo.

If you buy these really cheap, the software isn't always up to date and I've seen accounts of problems getting that to work
