The wife and the Volvo

Post by 850 LPT »

So my wife took the 05' V70 5-speed on a longer business trip today  I hope she doesn't like it too much or else I'll be driving an Odyssey to work in the near future :o . Well, not really, but she is no stranger to Volvo's and she drove and loved a 99' V70XC as a daily for 8 years.

I'm curious about what other members wifes/ husbands, girlfriends/ boyfriends, partners etc. are driving. Are you a hardcore Volvo family or do you let other brands sneak in? Share your stories.
98' S70, base, 5-speed manual, pewter/ tan, 145k miles
99' S70, base, 5-speed manual, nautic blue/ tan, 225k miles, currently inop
06' V70, auto, willow green/ charcoal, 147k miles
79' Ford Capri S, Euro Spec 2.8 V6, T9 5-speed manual, owned since 1986
58' Porsche Diesel Junior
13' Honda Odyssey
84' Mercedes 300 D, gold/ tan, 420k miles (retirement project :D )

I routinely lose my T5 to my better half when she feels frisky, and my P2 when she is feeling classy, and leaves me with the lousy BMW slush box.

Luckily I keep the turbo stick VW Beetle under lock at work....

My wife drives our S70, base, 5-speed. (The inspiration behind my screen name when I signed up here at MVS...) She's always loved the "look" of Volvos and the "feel" of them as well. And now that she's been driving one for about a year, she's convinced these are the cars for her. She has a brother who could get us a pretty good deal on a new Nissan and we're still thinking about staying with Volvos... I do think she needs something "newer" for when she's feeling classy however. :)

Wife's father drove a 2000 S70 in Ukraine, she asked for one and we got the 98 base. A year later ended up getting the T5 which I'm modding but I see she has a heavy foot too so I might look for a V70 T5 or R in the near future as I keep tools in the car and wagons are superb in storing stuff.
Back in the early 90s my cousins drove Mercedes Benz and a 760 turbo and on longer trips they loved to take the Volvo instead and that's where I heard the good things about Volvo but was too busy after GTis and Audi's. Also had a love affair with Ford Probe GTs from 98 till 2013 and collected 3 first gens and 3 second gens during those years which the 94 GT-T went thru 7 engines and 5 transmissions (the Guinea pig).
The simplicity on working with P80 Volvos paved the road to kick this new addiction :)
We'll see :)

My girlfriend drives both my 850, and my '77 Cutlass. She prefers the Cutlass. I'm personally torn between the two, they both have their vices.

They last longer if you don't cook steaks in your cars

Haha, I probably should have worded that a little better. The lady is perfect, no complaints there  The Volvo gets great gas mileage, and has never left me stranded on the side of the road. Being naturally aspirated, it leaves something to be desired when accelerating. The Cutlass is fast, gets compliments whenever I drive it, but you can practically watch the gas gauge move when you kick it down and open up the secondaries.
