97 850 sedan lock harness question

Post by scot850 »

I am having to replace/repair the trunk lock wiring harness for 4 broken wires. I have found a good harness that feels nice and flexible and would like to replace just the 4 wires from the connecter at the lock as far back as they go.

Is there an easy way to remove the connectors from the connector block? They have 2 tiny barbs locking them into the connector that will need to be depressed to get them out safely. Anyone done this and successfully?

Above picture is one of the barbs that I cut out of the spare harness to see how they worked.

Not a great picture, but hopefully shows the small barbs. One on the top and the other below.

Thanks,

Neil.

Here's a pricey example:

I've made the same tool with a tiny screwdriver and a fine grinding wheel.
You can even fab one out of high quality spring steel like a scrap of antenna rod.

Just be careful about how hard you press on the tang when releasing the contact
from the plug body. It's easy to bend it too far down and it may not lock when you
reinstall it. Bending it back up can snap it off if you aren't careful.

Also - Since you're in the Great White North, you might consider a low temp rated
wire for the part of the harness that moves. It'll last forever in colder climates.
Look for an SJOWA rated conductor at the truck and trailer shops. They'll know.

I'll look at this, but these are a pain as they have a double tang, one either side and not a lot of room. May just cut them out of the spare loom and then I don't have to be as careful with the originals when removing as long as I don't damage the connector.

Appreciate the guidance as always.

Thanks for the link to the tools. However, I found what looks like the same item on ebay.ca for 40% of the price!

I've ordered myself a set and a 2nd set for one of the Volvo mechanics who offered to try to remove the pins with his pick tool and broke it! I feel guilty as I hate to see something like that happen when a favor is being done.
