ABS wheel sensor?

Wife said the dash lit up today like a x-mas tree, wouldn't reset on subsequent restarts.

Vida Dice is tossing two new codes.

ABS-0012 Wheel Sensor, left front Faulty signal
ECM-510F Vehicle speed signal (VSS) - Signal too low

Do we have a questionable ABS sensor and is it triggering the ECM code (never seen either before) or does it work the other way...does a bad ECM signal/wire trigger the ABS? Hate to read to much into this as it seems like a standar ABS sensor failure. If so any known good write ups?

The speed is picked up by ABS sensor therefore you have 2 codes there.Check the ABS pick up ring is not cracked or there is no grease etc preventing the signal,if all good just replace the sensor as per fault code.

check the part number of the ABS module in the car. Pull the airbox then use your cell phone or a mirror to read the 7 digit part number off of the face of the module which is pointing down.

it's likely an 8622093. There are two variations of that module, one that fails and one that almost never fails. Same module but a touch different inside. The type that almost never fails will have an elevated block at the bottom of the socket that the harness plugs into. for the type that fails, the bottom of that socket will be completely flat.

if the part number starts with a 9, then I'd go straight after the module. All of the 9****** modules fail at some point.

That being said, it's one of two things. Either the abs module or you really are getting a faulty signal from that corner.

Questions...

1. Do the tone rings ever really go bad...I cannot image them but yet see several discussions on them cracking. I'd assume if they were cracked or a tooth was damaged it would trigger the ABS/STC right away when driving...but when I reset with Vida Dice I can drive and hour or more before the issue comes back. Maybe just a cleaning?

2. When a module fails does it keep coming back to the same wheel (left front) or would I expect erratic and random behavior? Obviously you are a tech and I'm curious to how a failed module shows in codes!

OK, the Module number started with 86XXXXX so it sounds like I got a good one so I moved down below. I pulled the plug on the ABS sensor and slowly turned over the hub so I could inspect the ring...not an issue. So I figured I was due for a new sensor...when there I saw it. The tire had rubbed through the wire and hit copper!

Since I don't have a sensor handy I decided to cut resplice, solider and shrink wrap the wire. Not sure if these sensors are sensitive to resistance or just look for a signal...guess we'll find out tomorrow. Buddy lost the speed sensor on his F150 (rear diff) due to falling exhaust. His splice has worked for about a month w/o issue. Just posting for others that may find this thread! Thanks Matt.

If the repair job on the wire does it, you're set.

You still have to look at the large socket on the module to see which version of the 8622093 you have. There are two, one is going to fail and one isn't.

So very confused. I got from your writing that the 9X fail while the 86X do not!?!?! You stated 8622093 while mine was a different number other then starting with 86x.

Is the socket the defining factor of which is a bad one or not?
The socket is huge and we couldn't figure out how to disconnect the plug to see if the socket is raised.

I had the same codes on a 99 v70 xc. Had ECM-510F and ABS-0011 codes. Seems like I buggered up the CV shaft when removing. The notches that run around the CV shaft that are right below the ABS sensor were smashed, distorted in several places. I replaced that CV shaft with a spare, cleared the ABS code with VIDA, drove around the block and no more ABS or TRACs lights. While in there I thoroughly cleaned the ABS sensor and used a wire brush to clean the steering knuckle to ensure the ABS sensor was seated properly.

My ABS icon lit up other day and the Anti skid light flashes briefly like tires were spinning but they weren't. I pulled the ABS codes with my handheld and got ABS 0011- Front left wheel speed sensor fault. After pulling that wheel off I found this,

I guess it obvious that circuit is open, I just did a bunch of brake work and driveshaft replacement...finished in the dark. I had bent brake dust shield and I believe it crushed the wheel speed sensor wire into the knuckle were it mounts to strut body. I ordered another one from FCPEURO.COM.

Interesting. Is the wire correctly attached to the strut plastic (or metal) bracket?

Speaking of these sensors, careful not to pull on the wire (even just slightly) when removing a sensor or working on the suspension, always pry out the sensor with a flat screwdriver from underneath.
