Well, I'm an idiot. Looking for play in the bearings, I instead found a sloppy control arm bushing on the right side, opposite the control arm I'd replaced a year ago. Don't know how I didn't spot that when I first started trying to hunt the problem down.
I'm going to order some replacement parts, and then I'm going to go cry hot tears of shame for a little while. I am really a stupid, stupid boy.

Hey, fellow idiot! I thought your symptoms presented like a bad LEFT control arm, but I guess it's the moment of slop in the right LCA where the left pulls causing it to dart, not the resulting geometry pulling the car. I recently rebushed both LCAs on wife's XC90 for that reason, but both were indeed shot.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

The left arm is fine. I've never been able to wrap my head around what looseness would cause the wheel to wiggle in which direction - I think you'd need to know the exact geometries and forces involved, and I think it would vary from model to model of car.
Did you replace the bushings in the LCA, or did you just replace the whole arm? If the former, would you do it again if you had to, or would you rather swap the part and be done with it?
