V70 XC 2001 ETM or not ETM?

Post by antonevane »

I have an issue with my V70 XC 2001. I went through the most ETM topics and still couldn't figure it out what is wrong with my car yet.
After start car might have a so called limp mode on the low RPM and after computer reduce throttle (or close it completely) and I can go not more then 5 - 15 miles (rolling from hill adds the speed :))

I have a yellow sticker ETM.
I did VIDA ETM test differences was not more then 0.79%.
According XeModex flow chart pulled ETM fuse it looks like ETM works fine (I heard just one click in the end)

Any suggestions what do I need to check?

I pulled the following codes using VIDA for different events

The first set of VIDA codes:
ECM-903C Reconfiguration emission system - Information
ECM-904D Text message - Information
ECM-9190 Throttle position (TP) - Faulty current
ECM-91A7 Throttle position (TP) - Faulty control
ECM-91F0 Throttle position (TP) - Faulty current
ECM-903F Throttle position (TP) - Signal missing

The second set of VIDA codes
ECM-903C Reconfiguration emission system - Information
ECM-904D Text message - Information
ECM-902A Communication with throttle unit - Signal too low
ECM-917F Accelerator pedal position - Faulty signal
ECM-9190 Throttle position (TP) - Faulty current
CEM-1A5D Communication with ETM control module Signal missing

The third set of VIDA code
ECM-903C Reconfiguration emission system - Information
ECM-902A Communication with throttle unit - Signal too low
ECM-917F Accelerator pedal position - Faulty signal
ECM-9190 Throttle position (TP) - Faulty current

Have you cleared the codes to see how fast they come back?

Hi abscate, the ENGINE SERVICE URGENT REQUIRED message returned immediately once I started engine. (no power)
I will plug VIDA tomorrow to see what the codes are.

Ok, After clearing the codes and battery reset I see the following

I have read the vida codes:
ECM-903C Reconfiguration emission system - Information
ECM-904D Text message - Information
ECM-903F Throttle position (TP) - Signal missing
ECM-9190 Throttle position (TP) - Faulty current
CEM-1A5D Communication with ETM control module Signal missing
Checking compression
Checking fuel and residual pressures
Checking injectors
Checking spark plugs
Checking the freewheel on a generator (GEN)
Checking three-way catalytic converter (TWC) and exhaust system

It looks like it might be corroded/lose connection or ETM failure
Has anyone seen something similar?

ECM-9190 Throttle position (TP) - Faulty current
Means that motor of throttle actuator has issues.
If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer :)

I'm looking to have a used ETM.....
Can I avoid reprogramming?

Has anyone reprogrammed used ETM?
Is there a way to download software from the car

If you match part numbers exactly there is some chance that a used ETM will go in and work. It's roughly a 50% chance based on reports here. The gentleman above, Henry, aka double bug, programs these over the Internet too.

Xemodex is the another option and FCP sells refurbed ETMs as well.

To match exact part I need to have part from the same model/year car to have a similar software.

Xemodex is just a TPS upgrade as far as I understand.
Will they do a rebuild too if I send them my ETM?

Since I already have a yellow label ETM I don't know if Xemodex will help.
Looks like ETM has been replaced once and my option is refurb ETM.

ideal is the same model year and engine type.
But since there are some firmware upgrade levels so different levels do not work with each other.
I mean ETM and ECM should have the same firmware upgrade level.
