Driving home in my 2004 V70 turbo, air conditioning on, went to pass a car and the engine fell flat, went into limp mode, got home and it seemed to reset itself.
Oil was below the low oil mark so I added 1 1/2 qts, seemed to run fine.
On the way to work today it started making a hissing noise and a ffft fft noise, sounded like compressed air or vacuum.
It only made the noise when giving it gas and under load, mostly at slower speeds.
Got to work and left it, just went to start it and it sounds like bolts rattling in a tin can, noise seems to be coming from around the turbo or vale train area, application of gas makes it louder then it goes quiet when gas is let off.
Idles quiet.
Is this a blown turbo ?

Blown turbo induction pipe is more likely - especially since you are hearing air noises.
Im fresh off the boat dealing with this on my 1999.
Turbo blows are:
Expensive
Spectacular
Rare

the hissing noise turned into a rattle, sounds like turbo bearings, I could feel the rattling when I reached down to the turbo.
How should I proceed, pull the turbo?

I've never heard failed turbo bearings before so I can't help, there.
Remove the sound covers from the turbo and make sure nothing's loose in this area, turbo failures Are rare unless you have spewed oil everywhere

I got the heat shield out of the way, then the 2 large air ducts and assorted vac tubing etc, reaching into the turbo I definitely feel a very slight side to side movement on the compressor rotor, not a lot but its detectable, spins freely.
Nothing else out of the ordinary except some oil in the duct coming out the top of the turbo, the pipe that goes across the top of the engine. I wouldn't know if thats typical or not.
