1993 Volvo 240 Station Wagon

My car won't go past 2nd gear no matter how fast I go, also my over drive don't work. The light comes on and off when I push the button on the shifter but no change in the gears. This is my first Volvo and first car and I have ever owned. Any suggestions ??
