I dramatically cut down my oil consumption in one afternoon.

Since I log everything I do to my cars, it's easy to track how much oil I used.

Last few oil changes, (around 5000 miles interval), I've noticed the 210k T5 R engine used between 3 to 4.5 qt of oil, even with a pretty clean PCV system.

Before last oil change, I bought the tool and put in some new Volvo valve stem seals since I noticed intermittent blue smoke. At 8544 miles (drove 5500miles in 12 days) since my last oil change and the engine barely used 1 qt of oil, I'd call that a success.

Yeah,

For 2.5T engine, there are basically 2 sources of oil loss:

- Leaking Valve Stem Seals
- Turbo Seals

That tool looks wicked! Do you mind me asking the brand and where you got it from for future reference (you can never have too many tools!!).

Thanks,

Neil.

Looks good and reasonably priced for such a comprehensive kit.

Thanks,

Neil.

How hard was that job? I need to change my valve stem seals, and I've always figured I'd pop the head off and take it to a shop, but compression is good on all cylinders and I'm hesitant to mess with the head gasket if I don't have to.

I've needed to do the job since I bought the car 3+ years ago, actually, and I've just always had bigger problems to worry about. Now I have a leaky cam seal, so it's becoming more urgent.

Well I wish I was skilled enough to do valve stem seals in one afternoon! Nice work.

@ j-dwag: I totally agree about not pulling the head unless/until you absolutely must.

How hard? That depends on the person.

Buy new cam seals (Corteco seals) for both sides, 20 valve stem seals (I used Volvo seals), the 5 round seals around the plugs, Volvo pink anaerobic sealant, and the tool. Use an air compressor to put air into the cylinder to hold the valve closed. I did the 10 intake valves first than move the tool to do the 10 exhaust valves. Sometimes, you need to use a hammer to smack the valve lock to get it loose before you can use the spring compressor tool.

I did not use the special tool to hold down the cam while bolting down the cover, I put the assembly grease on the cams and journals, put anaerobic sealant in all the right places, I lined up the covers, then I just went slow and turned the bolts one turn at a time in a circular pattern from the inside out. It took a while, but I didn't break anything and there was no leak after.

Your experience matches mine. Before my burned valve episode the car was using about a quart every 1000 miles. After having new valve stem seals installed with the head rework, the oil consumption is just about nil.
