I actually disagree somewhat, an engine swap is not that hard, compared to say removing the head while leaving the engine in place. It is just that the engine is so heavy; the main issues are enough space to work in, having a hoist, and safety.

The problem with the NA to turbo swap is it requires not just the engine, it is closer to everything under the hood but the frame:

- engine
- complete engine wiring harness
- radiator (although not on a 2000)
- front half of the exhaust
- ECU (reprogramming required on a 2000)

If the ECU is such a problem there are standalone ECU's that can be used instead.

If its wiring then why can't the entire wiring harness be swapped from a turbo car to an NA?

These cars cost practically nothing to buy these days; why should a straight forward motor swap cost dump trucks of money?

Just a few thoughts I had.
The rub with the 99+ cars is that everything - instrument cluster, anti theft, climate unit, throttle module, SRS, Cruise, etc. is literally compiled as a single integrated software package. It is not unlike doing a Windows installation where the installation goes out and inventories the hardware through the Hardware Abstraction Layer and sets up accordingly. The difference is that with the Volvo you can't change drivers if you want to change or add an accessory, it all has to be recompiled.

If you wanted to strip out everything to make a track car then it can easily be done but if you want to make a street car driver out of it then you can't add an aftermarket ECU or none of the other canbus items will work.
