Sc-816 installation in a 94 Base 850 ??

I found a sc-816 head unit that had the code written on the top. So I installed it on my 94 850 Base model cause it had no head unit when I got it. Found out that the speakers weren't there either. So I picked up the tweeters for the dash, front door speakers, rear door speakers and rear deck speakers. I didn't think the rear doors came from the factory with speakers cause the covers were solid instead of screen-like and when I connected everything the rear door speakers were the only ones that didn't come on. Well a week later I smell electronic burning smell and the deck speakers stopped working. From what I've read here I mismatched the impedance and fried my rear channel on my head unit. I found out later the wires to the rear door speakers had been cut. Can the head unit be repaired by replacing the burned electrical components? Does anyone know what fries when this happens?

From the factory there is an impedance mismatch when all of the door speakers are installed anyway. The SC816 really doesn't care and a rear door/ deck set of 4 ohms in parallel works fine. That, in and of itself, shouldn't cause a problem I have run all of mine that way both with and without an amp. It may be that the SC816 itself was iffy or there is a problem with the harness to the doors.

When the head unit fried I only had the deck speakers connected to the rear channel. The door speakers had the wires cut inside the frame rail where the front passenger seat belt is housed. I didn't find the cut wires until after the head unit fried. The wires weren't bare they had been taped and appeared as though whatever had been connected there had been yanked out. Do you know if the head unit is repairable? And what components go bad?

The head unit is repairable but it really isn't worth it. The cost of repair is more than the cost to just get another one. I think the typical pick-n-pull price is about $30.00 and even if the code isn't written on it it is certainly easy to get the correct code.

I found a sc 810 that had the code written on it and it can run the CD changer that I have too. I am not keeping the CD changer but if I change my mind I will still have a way to play cds if I want.

It is weird you had this problem, as I have swapped different radios from an SC-810, to an 816, to a 900 and 901 and all worked fine in my 2000 R with the external amp.

Not that wierd. A car this old with clear signs
that a PO had been hacking up wiring? Stuff Happens.

Getting the speakers and wiring back to their
original condition is probably a good place to start.

I should have been more clear, that what you say is what I meant. I don't think the head unit is the issue, the hacking about or other old parts like frayed wires are the likely culprits.

So I got another HU and while checking the wiring to the rear speakers I found out that the door speakers I have are 8 ohm. I think this may have caused my HU to burn up but I am not sure.

Start from scratch and rewire all speakers up to the HU (or SC)
