2000 V70 Power Steering Fluid

I have the problem child - a 2000 V70.

As many of you probably know, there is some difficulty knowing which fluid should be used in the power steering.

The manual says ATF, but from what I gather, this may be incorrect, and it might need some expensive green stuff instead.
I also understand that the two fluids are incompatible with each other, and it's important to know which one you have.

The prevailing advice appears to be that you should just check what color the existing fluid is and use whatever is already in the tank.

Unfortunately, when I wiped the little dipstick on a white sheet of paper, it was brown.

I have seen ATF go brown like this, but I also read that the green stuff goes brown as it ages.

Is there any other way of knowing which one I have?

For example, are the fluids incompatible because they are immiscible? Could I find out what fluid I have by siphoning a small quantity and seeing if it will mix with ATF?

You can use either fluid so long as you change all of the fluid in the system. If you use ATF be sure to use only synthetic ATF as there is no power steering cooler.

Interesting read. Glad I went with pentosin. Some of the BMW and Audi guys have flushed and used Mobil synth atf and report good results. Pentosin is pricey but it's a good product, especially when outside temperatures plunge. A good way to save money on the purchase is to do pep boys 30% off code online and pick it up in the store that will save you about $5. One thing to note is if you need to top off and don't want to lay the money out for another full litre, Prestone European PS is $6 for a 12oz bottle at walmart and its the green stuff.
