I'd called myself a #4 only because I am so new to Swedes, but in all reality I am a closer to a 7 or 8 when you take into consideration my other "money suck".
A completely scratch build Lotus Super 7 replica. Known otherwise as a LoCost 7. It's got a VW 1.8l FWD lump mated to a T3/T4 with a Megasquirt v3 ECU and TechEdge WbO2 controlling it. A Toyota W55 Trans. A Subaru diff and rear suspension. Chevy Beretta front uprights and custom designed Suzuki R1 Inboard Pushrod suspension all around. Fully TIG welded frame and suspension components by yours truly.
Modding is one thing... designing from the ground up is another!
You think I should claim my 5?

As long as the e-brake works, you can claim a 5 for that.
Couldn't you get one Volvo thing on that?
I love the Locost 7 moniker - well done!!

Actually it will have an e-brake. Toyota handle and Wilwood cylinder with it's own reservoir. I gave up on trying to figure out how to route cables when I had to swap L-R on the rear uprights. I was looking at some nasty bends or bellcranks... NOPE!!!abscate wrote:As long as the e-brake works, you can claim a 5 for that.

Sorry about the lack of Volvo parts. There were not very many good donors in the WA yards!! So do I still get my 5?
I used a VW as that was 90% of all my experience is on and I wanted something unique (How many RWD VWs do you know of?
I'm already planning my next one which will be a mid-engine vehicle. I was going to design a BEC (Bike Engine Car), but after prowling around under the Volvo for a couple of days now and seeing how they package everything, I have changed my mind and will be clipping the front of a Volvo donor and making a Mid-Engine monster out of it. The 2.5 w auto trans is actually a pretty small package what you start eliminating things (power steering, AC...). It'll be a great donor.
Didn't mean to drag this off topic. If you want to see the whole timeline of the build, check out HERE for the entire thing! I'm Botbasher there too!
Cheers!

By the scale I get a 4. I'm doing the top-end on my 3rd motor for the year right now (fixer uppers for my kids, or to pay for parts for the Volvos.) I have done a couple full engines, years ago. I still manage to find the hard way to do things, or sometimes re-do them! That is why I value these fora.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Botbasher, as you have DIYed it, you are obviously a 5 as a tech. Fabricator, Designer, and tuner are all 5+ skills.

I gave myself a 3 although I can give advice on 4 &5. I stop at taking the engine apart- the reason is that I've seen mine ruined before by a supposedly good mechanic...I certainly know what not to do and can help walk someone through a top end rebuild but don't really want to do it myself.
