Yep. Back to square one. With the heat shield off I had a listen with a stethoscope and it's definitely coming from the turbo. I didn't see and excessive oil or any metal shavings in the intercooler hoses though.

Consider checking all the bolts back there anyway, as well as exhaust fittings - sound travels strangely in the exhaust system, and the flex pipe and hangers are known failure points.

Checked the turbo for play and there was very slight up and down play and none in and out.

Where is the flex pipe?

Look behind the engine, and from the outlet of the turbo, towards rear. You'll see a small section of the exhaust pipe that looks like it's made of braided steel (probably rusty red). That's the flex pipe, or flex joint.

Probably ok. It rides on bearing film once oil pressure goes up so some play is ok. Very slight is ok.
