850 front cam/crank seal install tool?

Post by scot850 »

I have seen the real fancy tools and Robert is having some made up too, but I need to get on with this job and there is no where in this wonderful city of 1.2m people that sells decent install tools for this job with recessed seals going over a shaft.

What do al of you that don't have the fancy tools use to prevent the inner lip folding back and releasing the spring coil from the seal?

I watched Robert's video and he used the old seal which I have done before, but is the real secret to lube the cam end well first? Vida recommends using grease rather than oil for this purpose.

Thoughts?

I used a lot of oil, can't remember if I used grease or not. I think it's a crap shoot without a tool.

I used the Volvo tools today (they kindly loaned them to me as they didn't need them today). Took the advice of the head mechanic and used vaseline on the tool. You mount the seal on the tool on a thin sleeved portion that keeps the inner lip off the shaft of the cam/crank until you remove it which stops the lip rolling. I will not know how well I did this for a few days until I get the engine and drive line back together, but from what the mechanic said, I am hopefully optimistic all when well, and quick too! I took pictures of the tools and will post those when I get time. Took about 30 minutes for all 3 max.
