Self diagnostic troubles

Post by oceanman »

No start problem. It's been sitting for a while and tinkering when time allows. I havereplaced the starter recently.
It's either no spark or no fuel (logical deduction)
Just charged the battery (did a load test to make sure it was ok) and jumped the fuel pump relay to see if that was the problem. I could hear the pump whirring as normal before I tried to start. Doesn't mean it's pumping, but it's making noise.
When the starter is running, it's not making the normal engine cranking noise- it's more of a whirring sound. A while back I had a buddy turn the key and I looked into the oil fill- the cam was spinning, so I know it's not the timing belt. It made the same noise prior to starter replacement- that's why I swapped it out for a new one- Bosch from autozone, perfect fit.
I tried to pull the codes. With the connector in place and then key on, the LED is lit dimly, going bright when I press the button and when flashing codes. I pulled A1 and A3 successfully, but A2 (fuel system, right?) did not flash. It was illuminated brighter than the others in its base mode, and went bright when I pressed the button, but no flashing codes. I'm thinking there is an electrical short somewhere, worst case scenario is a blown computer.
I know the previous owner had the computer chipped by ipd, but this was ages ago. I think we bought it in 2006.
All apologies for the lengthy post- I try to cram as much info in to avoid unnecessary back and forth.
If you feel it necessary to have the codes I pulled, let me know and I'll add them

My main concern is the trouble accessing the dtc. Has anyone had this problem before? I've never noticed the LED be dimly lit in between the flashes- it's always been either on or off. Could this somehow effect ignition?

Many of the '94 turbos have OBD-II, have you checked to see if you have an OBD-II port under the ashtray? If so it would be interesting to see if that responds.

Does the idle air control valve buzz when you put the key in position II? The wiring to the master fuel system relay is very exposed and it would be easy to yank the wires to it while changing a starter. If the master fuel system relay isn't working the idle air control valve will not run and the injectors won't fire.
