I just looked at my 98 NA and a 97 (they are of course the same), the lower hole is a bit behind the belt path but not behind the pulley per se.

Hah, you beat me to it! Had to run a couple of Volvo related errands first, but I'll add a couple of other photos in case they help:

Not sure if they help with the pump and the belt tensioner. Last photo is not great, but tried to show lower bolt position in relation to the belt, but my camera is not as slim as eriks so couldn't get it to focus. Lower bolt head is just visible at bottom of photo.

Everything happens for a reason. Got the tensioner back on. Had to remove the upper timing belt cover to make room to wiggle the tensioner in. I used Steve's tip of putting the bottom bolt in first, then pivoting up to position the top bolt. There are not two upper holes drilled in the bracket.

Once in place, I threaded the serpentine belt (incorrect routing as it turns out) then noticed that one edge looked a little rough. I probably could reuse the belt, but I'm not going to take the chance, so it will be off to Bridgewater Volvo tomorrow a.m. for a new belt (although I suppose I could get a Gates or Conti belt at an auto parts store tonight. . .

Thanks all for hanging in there with me.

Al, I'm all over that. 78 is my regular commuting route. I could swing by on my commute home this p.m. If you want to send me your address by p.m. I'll probably leave the office around 5:30,.which (depending on traffic).could put my near you around 6 or 6:15. If convenient that is.

Met Al and and got his used belt on the way home from work tonight and will install it first thing tomorrow morning. It's stuff like this that makes MVS a website second to none. Matt, you've built a nice community here. Al, it was very nice to meet you and thanks again for the belt.

Thanks again to all of you for helping me out.
