Possibility of loose bulbs as well. My clock, temp, MPG, etc. LCD screen has loose bulbs (I knocked them loose re-installing the cluster) and when I hit bumps in the road, either they will go out completely or come on half lit/ fully lit.

So on my recent trip to the PnP, I grabbed a potentiometer and an actual headlight switch. Since the parts were so cheap, I swapped out both. Gauge lights now stay lit and do not flicker. I don't know whether it was the potentiometer or actual light switch that was bad, I'm just happy to have a fully functioning dash again.

Neil is quite correct about having to be super gentle in removing the potentiometer because of the offset spring clips. I removed mine from behind after pulling the rear fog log switch. I went in through the rear fog light slot in the dash and eased the potentiometer out from behind. It is still very easy to snap off the plastic holding the spring clips to the switch body as my efforts to retrieve potentiometers from the PnP taught me.

I think Misha nailed it, but it could have been the actual light switch since I changed both at the same time thus failing to isolate the variables.
