Background: 98 v70 T5 was giving me fits with the PNP light show and 3rd gear only issue. So I rebuilt the PNP switch which fixed the safety mode and the car ran great, BUT it was throwing a CEL for a faulty PNP switch.
So this week I ordered a replacement PNP switch (non Volvo), and after installing it the light show has returned and the CEL remains.
I believe I installed it correctly as the reverse light trick works great and almost everything works as it should. So what did I miss? Or is the knockoff switch really that bad? I need to fix this because Texas won't pass state inspection with a check engine light and all the shops I've talked to won't touch it even though it's a non safety item. Any help?

Did you align it properly? Seems odd that it would still be throwing a CEL.

Code was a P0705 prior to me replacing with a new sensor. I literally just installed the new sensor and all hell broke loose.
I'm not sure I did it correctly, I followed a couple different methods and the one with checking the reverse light actuation is sort of what I stuck to. If that's wrong let me know and I'll adjust.

I adjusted using the reserve lights and it worked for me.

Same here and used a lead pencil to mark the range on the connector itself. It was much easier than I had thought when I did this job years ago.bmdubya1198 wrote:I adjusted using the reserve lights and it worked for me.

So I've swapped back and forth between the factory PNP and the aftermarket PNP, absolutely no change. I believe it must be something different, but now the car is stuck in the safety mode and I'm not going to try driving it anywhere.

Also, the switch can be removed/installed without Unbolting the cable and losing the adjustment

So the tranny is in limp mode... I know this one all too well! Is the up arrow light working? Check any and all connectors nearby the PNP switch. I had a huge issue with that when I bought my V70... took me 4 months to figure out what was wrong (good thing it was a project at that point and didn't need to drive it). It was a large square connector between the fan and the front intake tube that had broken and didn't have a complete connection. Fixed it, up arrow light came back on, switched it out of winter mode, and no more limp mode!
