Noise when being driven

I have a Volvo S40 2007, it has done 95.000 miles.
The past few weeks I have been getting a noise when driving, the only way I can describe it is its like the noise you hear when your on an aeroplane. The higher the speed the louder the noise. Steering, exeleration seem normal, it's just the noise. Has anybody got any ideas what this could be?

Automatic or manual? Is the noise a whine or a grind? If it's a whine sound it could be the PCV. In our cars that's the replacement of the oil filter housing that attaches to the side of the motor on the front. In the U.S. there was a recall on that part, even in our model year and the dealer already replaced mine in my S40 ('07) before I bought it. If it's a "whine" then check with your dealer there in England and see if they offer the same recall there- you'll need your VIN#.

OP states the noise gets louder with vehicle speed, not engine speed, so we can rule out a PCV problem.

This sounds like the belts in the tire aren't laying right. Have the tires professionally inspected, and be sure they check the rims for runout.
