1999 S70 ABS light, rough run, stall (Coil failure)

Post by MattsS70 »

Hey guy's. I own a 99 S70 with 200K that I love! It's my 2nd one (I had a RWD '97 S70!). I recently picked up another S70, a 2000 MY, for real cheap because it was setting a bunch of codes. I've been working out the issues slowly taking one code at a time and resolving it, but I'm at a sticking point.

I'm getting a P0600 code that seems to be a communication error based on what I've read on here. I'm also getting intermitent ABS, Triangle, and Check Engine Lights but only throwing the P0600 code. I'm also having intermitent driveability issues as follows;
Rough idle and occational stall when it comes down off higher RPM. I'm thinking this may be a bad Idle Air Valve. Also seems to run a bit rough and be a little down on power at times when I accelertate from a stop, but not always, and if I key-off, the problem goes away. I'm thinking I need both an ABS modual and an Idle Air control valve.

Do you guys think I have diagnosed this correctly? Any other suggestions? I just hate spending money and replacing random parts without being pretty sure that its causing the issue. Any guidance would be much appreciated!

ABS module is a possibility and more likely the ETM needs re-furbished.

What is the ETM again?? Is that the throttle body? I know ECM is engine control and TCM is trans control....

ETM = Electronic throttle module. This is what controls the throttle as part of the throttle body and replaced the old throttle cable. There are 2 sensors that fail with age and give random throttle control. There are several companies out there that repair them, with Xemodex being the big player that often comes up on here.

There is an ETM section on here and also a Xemodex Q/A section the at they respond to.

The companies like Xemodex use contactless control modules that don't wear out like the original. It is an issue that affected Volvos from 99-02 possibly 03.

Probably he meant to say AWD and if indeed was a RWD, I'm curious to see it too :)

I knew nobody would believe me when I posted that about the red s70. I've done a bunch of research and have never found anything on a RWD S70 but I swear to you guys I had one! It was a red 1997 S70 with a naturally aspirated I-5 and rear wheel (not AWD)! I know it's weird. I bought it in Fairfax Virginia back in 2009 had it for a couple of years and sold it. That car is why I fell in love with these cars!
Trust me, I know my cars, I have worked for Ford motor company since 1996 and I'm an avid car guy! I have a Mustang GT, A 2014 Focus ST and the two Volvos!

The very first RWD S70 I've ever heard of sure...There was a very similar looking car made until '98 that was a RWD...Maybe S90? I get them mixed up on the road all the time. The big difference is the rear triangular side windows are different but otherwise, they look like a good match to the S70.

S90 is a lot bigger than S70 and totally different looking car.

Matt...you don't have an idle air control valve on your 1999. Everything went electronic on your

You just can't diagnose these cars by symptom anymore, especially a 1999

A bad AbS wheel sensor or wire will. Give you that ABS light, you have to get the codes read and see what faults are reported, clear the codes, then see what comes back. If someone recently did brake work, I would guess that they strained the ABS wire and caused that issue.

Read codes, find suspect parts, identify bad parts, replace.

Find the label on your ETM and Post picture so we can decode it's age.
