Replacing strut mounts on 2000 S70

Post by ckm1915 »

During an oil change the mechanic told me my strut mounts were leaking and needed replacing. I asked "my struts? or strut mounts?" He replied my strut mounts. I didn't think those leaked? But I'm no mechanic - that's why I'm here. So do strut mounts leak? Are they easy to replace? Or do you basically have to take off the entire strut and assembly? And if so, should I also replace the strut at the same time? Anything else while I'm in there? Car has 125,000 miles... Also, he quoted $550 to replace the strut mounts and realign. Sound reasonable? Seems high to me...

Thanks

Struts can leak, strut mounts cannot, ther just a piece of steel and runner but at 125K you should replace them and the rear shocks.
You won't believe what a difference it will make
About a 2 to 2 and a 1/2 hour job so unless he's getting nearly $200 an hour find a new mechanic, a DEALER probably wouldn't charge as much unless that includes parts

I would say you need to change ....your mechanic. Strut mounts cant leak as JRL suggested as they are simply a gear. They usually seize up due to lack of lubrication or wear.

In defence of your mechanic, is he suggesting that both fronts need doing along with the struts themselves?

I would suggest you get it in writing or have him break down the costs of the parts and labour. That way you know what your getting and if its a deal and if you cant figure if its fair or not...matthews site will help you!
