While doing repair work on my 2007 xc70 , I am also doing general maintenance items. Was a little surprised that the whole thermostat housing had to be replaced $60-100+ depending on whether it was after market or OEM. Want to know if anyone has found a replacement for just the thermostat. I am also wondering if an earlier model housing ( with replaceable thermostat) could be used.
I found this http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1861832
It was listed on ebay also as fitting my year/ model.
Thanks , Rob

I went through the exact same issue on my daughter's '07 S60 a couple months ago. It turns out that I could have used an earlier model year's housing/stat arrangement (something like an '02) and ended up with a situation where the NEXT time, I could replace just the stat itself. For where I was, it was going to be either a longer wait for a used housing from somewhere unknown or almost the exact same total cost to get the old arrangement. I ended up getting the newer one for the '07 and decided that it will probably last as long as we have the car. I typically don't lie to pass on a problem to the next owner, but sometimes you just have to keep things simple.

Thanks for the reply. I will have to look at the local pick a part junkyards, but also I am wondering if you can just but a new housing for a pre 2003 from the dealer or OEM parts place. I am going to order just the thermostat I linked to and see if it fits.

OMG I JUST TODAY OK'd my mechanic replacing my whole thermostat housing on my 02 v70XC because the thermostat I bought wasn't the right one for an '02 because mine takes that one! And I couldn't find that thermostat anywhere!
It seems that in America, you can only get the entire assembly new. In the UK you can buy that 'stat on Amazon or eBay.
Also, when I pull up my model on RockAuto, that thermostat you posted (which is what my car has) is not listed at all as an option.

What engines do you guys have? My daughter's S60 is a 2.5T, and I know for a fact that the earlier version is still available from the dealer where you can get the housing and stat separately. That might not be the case for your engines, though.

Mine is the B5254T2,( 5 cyl 2.5 Turbo) I think basically the same engine as yours as far as the mounting holes for the thermostat housing go?
I hope someone else more knowledgeable than me will chime in. Someone must have done this mod if it was possible.

"It seems" the one for diesel engines fits inside the gas engines housing. Not sure about the temp range, though and doesn't come with the seal. All thermostats will start failing about 8 years old

The Gates TH35991 is the one listed for my 2007 xc70 on the gates site and the volvo site.

That listing I linked to at rock auto is old and they no longer carry it. I dont know why it cant be found except on ebay and is expensive.
The TH35991 # may have been superseded by another # , will call local some parts places tomorrow.
Rob
I just noticed on the bottom of the volvo link cross reference #'s

I found what I was looking for while searching for a 2003 V70 with the 2.5T -- searched on volvopartswebstore.com . The part numbers and current prices are listed in the attached PDF document, along with images showing the two applications. The older version which has the replaceable stat DOES REQUIRE a DIFFERENT UPPER RADIATOR HOSE configuration, though. However, once done, all you have is the stat to worry about. That's also part of why I did not go that route... I had already purchased and installed the upper hose for the newer (2005+) stat housing's nozzle orientation.fixer333 wrote:Mine is the B5254T2,( 5 cyl 2.5 Turbo) I think basically the same engine as yours as far as the mounting holes for the thermostat housing go?

Yes... same engine as mine. The mounting is identical because I checked the part numbers across the years. You MIGHT just have to purchase a used housing, though, if your dealer does not or cannot get the older version.

Thanks for posting that. The only thing I noticed is that in the diagram, it looks like the older housing version has 3 mounting bolts instead of two. I will look further to try and find more pictures of it.F250 wrote:I found what I was looking for while searching for a 2003 V70 with the 2.5T -- searched on volvopartswebstore.com .
