Had the R at the dealer today for the sub-frame alignment and steering alignment done they forgot to do when replacing the front anti-sway bar.
28C on the way home in busy rush hour traffic stuck in the right lane with no where to pull off when the engine temp goes skyward. Manage to perform an emergency exit on a left slip road and get to a point safe to stop. Pull the hood (which typically didn't want to co-operate) and think that the cooling fan may not be working, but then hear it is. Open the hood and find coolant all over the engine bay. After a look around find the top radiator hose sheared right off at the clip and no coolant. Now praying the head gasket is not toast. Phoned the dealer and said I wasn't amused and will be talking to the boss tomorrow. Th y had the sub-frame loose and can only believe they overstressed the top hose so it fractured on the way home after about 4km in traffic.
Looked up the price of an OE radiator and it is over $350 with shipping if I have to pay for it and to find out if the head gasket has survived.
Bugger....
Neil.

Nissens radiators seem to be fine for much cheaper, and a quick compression test, for nearly zero disassembly, will tell you how the gasket has fared.

Sorry to hear this, Neil. I just put a Nissens radiator in my 850 and it went fine. Good quality part, good fit, quick shipping, no problems, US$152 http://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/38179/Radiator-65539A/

It was only last month
had had my second loss of coolant, blowing the aftermarket heater core.
It was also fortunate not to warp a head or lose a gasket after driving a mile or so.
Agree with j-dawg on Nissens. It is what is in the white wagon after the 30 degree below zero winter had purged the original. I feel I need to explain.
The first loss of coolant was a severed heater hose.
That is when I had put it up for all or the hose replacements, well, manifold, throttle body, ECU, 3" intake radiator. etc.
Two Weeks.
It had only taken that long while waiting for the Aisins Water Pump, and the radiator.

Really need to put a radiator in to get the engine warm enough to do a compression test. I'm tempted by the Nissens but the 2 I have had were a pain to seal at the top, and one leaked from the gecko from the join between the plastic end cap and the core. I may have to go that route as the price of Volvo radiators is now so stupid high. These have gone up by nearly 50% I reckon in the last few years to the point where you can get more than 2 Nissens for the price of a Volvo one.
I'll talk to the dealer tomorrow and see what they have to say.
Appreciate the thoughts and inputs.
Neil.

So your top hose ruptured right where it joins the radiator? Bummer....or bugger! Did your radiator also fail? Guess I'm confused.
I recently replaced all original cooling hoses, except for the two heater hoses. Went with Volvo OEM. Couldn't believe a local Volvo-only shop was actually using URO hoses!! That's nuts....
I did have my radiator oil cooler split, allowing oil into the cooling system. Replaced with Nissans and haven't had any trouble since.

I swapped in the manual transmission and put in an external engine oil cooler so I can put in an all aluminum radiator. The built-in trans/oil cooler of the Chinese made the all aluminum radiator have poor o-rings from factory, I couldn't trust the coolers not to mix coolant with oil/atf so I remove those coolers and had the tanks welded.

When I had taken My '98 XC From storage, it had had a drip leak as well. I had to have a replacement to drive it from storage to home.
Replaced it in the parking lot.
For one and a half the price of a Nissens, I had to take what Autozone had on hand. Almost twice the price.
Not sure if you have that Parts place in Canada?
I regret that. I believe it had overheated the Trans. on the way home.
Now I have that to deal with no forward motion.
You may have already looked at tis thread, but I had tried to document what I had learned.

Sorry to hear about this. Major bummer.
I put a Nissens in a friend's '00 V70, 1 year later and the thing still looks great. I'm a believer.
