2002 XC70 downshift 2 to 1 with a clunk

Greetings to you all.

I just bought an XC70 2002 with 3,600 Mi, after long hesitation and reading of all kind of favor or against opinions. Finally I have it and I love what I have seen 'till now. Just a question.....When I drive and brake to get to a crossing or a red light for example, the car geras down from 2 to 1 with a clunk noice, not too loud for enough to be clearly heard.... I had never drove a Volvo before and wonder if this is normal..... the rest feels and handles just nice....any comments?

I know that the 2001 models came with software loaded that would go into 1st gear and then actually neutral on stop. This can be disabled through the dealer and highly recommended as without the feature being disabled, many transmissions were getting shot. It could be that your '02 is a late model car built in '01 and still got the '02 badging, so I would check with your dealer on that by calling them and giving them your VIN#. I can't recall the name of this but if you describe it to the dealer they will know what it is. If it's not that, then I would check your transmission fluid to see if it's dark or burnt and consider doing some "drain and fills" to replace the fluid in it. You can read about that procedure on this forum as there is plenty written about it as well as what is best for your car with some differing opinions on it.
